When Simone Biles graciously bowed out this week, we learned that it’s not just GRIT that’s important. ⁠⁠

Sometimes we need to claim our power and GRIP our way forward. I talk a lot of GRIT in #lifestylemedicine and #physicaltherapy practice, but I am adopting a new acronym now. GRIP. ⁠⁠

I’ve been talking about #growthmindset and #courage to #boundaryset all week, and then Simone Biles goes and teaches US ALL THE ULTIMATE LESSON about radical #selfcare. ⁠

As women, we *especially* push ourselves too hard - it's socially acceptable and even encouraged to sacrifice our mental and physical health for others. I know because I'm a mom of 3, a small business owner x 2, and a lifelong, willing community volunteer. ⁠

Simone is offering up a life lesson we cannot ignore: ⁠
⁠
✅ WE CAN BE MORE #courageous in the personal choices we make. ⁠
✅ We can be more courageous in our pursuit of self-care and self preservation. ⁠

The last few weeks of the summer juggle with kids and work are exhausting but rewarding.

Parents everywhere know what I’m feeling, the rallying that has to happen all summer long, and the exhale 😮‍💨 that we hope to feel coming on if #covid allows our kids to return to school this fall.

So today is all about #findingthejoyineveryday and the good in everything.

It reminds me of one of my favorite passages from #shakespeare As You Like It:

“And this our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything.”

When the path forward can seem murky, I return to Carol Dweck’s proverbs on Fixed vs Growth mindsets. I remind myself: ⁠

✅ There is always a path forward, no matter how hard the present situation seems. ⁠
⁠
✅ There are people that love and support me, and I need to lean on those people in times of need. ⁠
⁠
✅ I need to be a source of support and love for the friends, family, and colleagues who need me when they are feeling stuck. ⁠
⁠
✅ Failing is nothing more than First Attempts at Learning. Get up, dust yourself off, and try again. ⁠
⁠
Hope this helps you exhale and start anew like it does for me. ⁠
